WHGBL Holds Dinner Appreciation Event
On Tuesday, March 10, the West Hartford Girls Basketball League (WHGBL) proudly hosted its annual Dinner Appreciation Event at The Pond House Café, honoring the dedication and commitment of its Board Members, Coaches, Officials, and League Sponsors. Nearly 60 guests attended the evening, which celebrated the collective efforts that continue to strengthen and grow the league.
The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the past season, recognize outstanding contributions, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of the league. Guests enjoyed dinner while participating in thoughtful discussions around league operations, seasonal successes and challenges, and ways to further enhance the experience for players and families.
State of the League Address
The evening began with a State of the League address from WHGBL President Shawn Daly. During his remarks, Daly highlighted several significant developments from the season, including the transition to a new league service provider to improve billing, communications, and website management, as well as increased consistency and reach of the league’s eNewsletter.
Daly also emphasized the success of introducing team sponsorships, which allowed the league to reinvest directly into its programs. These partnerships supported upgraded equipment, improved uniforms, and enhanced programming across all levels. In addition, he noted the league’s continued focus on coaching development and the introduction of new exhibition games with neighboring towns—initiatives that have broadened opportunities and elevated the overall quality of play. His message was clear: the West Hartford Girls Basketball League is stronger than ever.
Open Dialogue and Collaboration
Throughout the evening, coaches were encouraged to share constructive feedback with Board Members, offering insights into the league’s strengths, areas for improvement, and opportunities for growth. This open exchange of ideas reinforced the league’s commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement. Board Members expressed their appreciation for the feedback and committed to reviewing and discussing it during upcoming meetings as planning begins for next season.
President’s Award Presentation
The evening concluded with the presentation of the WHGBL President’s Award – Person of the Year. This honor recognizes an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the league over the course of the year. Shawn Daly proudly presented this year’s award to League Treasurer Doug Packard.
In his remarks, Daly praised Packard for his fairness, objectivity, and unwavering passion for the league. He highlighted Packard’s role as a trusted advisor to the Board, noting his thoughtful perspective and straightforward New England approach, which consistently helped keep discussions focused and productive.
Appreciation and Gratitude
Before closing the event, Daly extended his sincere thanks to all Board Members and sponsors for their tireless efforts, as well as to the volunteer coaches and officials whose time and dedication are essential to the league’s success. Their collective commitment ensures that WHGBL continues to provide a positive, well-run, and enriching experience for all participants.
The Dinner Appreciation Event served not only as a celebration, but as a reminder of the strong community behind the West Hartford Girls Basketball League and the shared commitment to its continued success.
